Another victim of the replication crisis in the social sciences. The research this was based on involved tiny sample sizes, weak effects, and shameless p-hacking. No surprise the attempts to replicate the results failed. Dana Carney, one of Amy Cuddy's co-authors on the study, has now conceded that the reported effect is not real. Social psychology is being revealed to be junk science at its worst.
From wikipedia:In 2014, Eva Ranehill and other researchers tried to replicate this experiment with a larger group of participants and a double-blind setup. Ranehill et al. found that power posing increased subjective feelings of power, but did not affect hormones or actual risk tolerance.
Two researchers at the Wharton School, Simmons & Simonsohn, later shared a meta-analysis of the same 33 studies on their statistics blog.Based on the distribution of p-values reported across the studies (the 'p-curve'), they concluded that studies so far have demonstrated little to no average effect of power posing. Their analyses will appear in Psychological Science.
In a pre-registered direct replication, found that expansive (vs. contractive) body postures had either no effect or actually reduced psychological states associated with power. The fact the study was pre-registered, had a large n (over 300), used multiple measures of power (an ultimatum game, a gamble, and feelings of being powerful and in charge), and tested not only posing but adopting a direct eye gaze increases confidence that expansive poses have no or in fact negative effects on feelings of power.
Another critique of the findings and methodology appeared in a January 2016 article published in Slate magazine by two professors at Columbia University.
In response to the results of these replication studies and meta-analysis, Carney repudiated the effect in an open letter dated September 2016, stating "The evidence against the existence of power poses is undeniable", and discouraging others from studying power poses.
Since the release of Carney's statement a special issue of Comprehensive Results in Social Psychology has been published on the topic of power posing. A summary paper co-authored by Carney entitled "CRSP special issue on power poses: what was the point and what did we learn?", states that a meta-analysis of the preregistered studies included in the issue, "showed a reliable non-zero effect on felt power".] In fact, according to Gronau et al, who conducted this meta-analysis, it "yields very strong evidence for an effect of power posing on felt power".
The "power posing" theory has been described as an example of the so-called replication crisis in psychology, in which initially seductive theories could not be replicated in follow-up experiments.
this shit has me dead 😂😂 First she says that mostly only white guys n girls show these poses in her classrooms? like wtf Idk one black person that's not pretty confident. but you know what gets you a job? look the guy directly in the eye, stand straight up shoulders back and shake the dudes hand firmly. that says I am confident and know how to handle myself, not striking a fuckin pose when you see the dude and being like check me out I'm hot
Firstly, the fact that you don't know anyone black, who is not confident, proves nothing. It's like saying that the sun doesn't exist in the night, because you can't see it. And secondly, she said very clearly not to pose in front of the guy that you have interview with, so... Start listening 😉 And about getting a job... Her studies are not created just for that. If you are not confident, that's when it becomes helpful. It's about changing your mind, not only acting in front of others.
The power poses are very true..! I do believe in them. But the question is: when I do one of the power poses, I get two things at a time: 1- confidence and some sort of 2- arrogance. How can desperate and differentiate between the two?
Is not about being perceived by others as powerful, is what the brain triggers when you do those power poses even if alone, and they have overwhelming evidences for it on this study, please before you brag bullshit try to understand the evidences they presented.
Judgment is always selfish, which is most likely conditioned from our ability to survive. How you want to see the world to be is hinged around how you teach the world to be, which is based of how you've been conditioned to view the world around you, which is all subjective. So if survival requires you to be perceived as powerful, then it requires one to separate those who might not be, and those perceptions might not be true in a culture that wants to judge unnecessarily. There's truth to this video, but it's funny that it is true in my opinion... as maybe survival is really a crude sense of love seeking something better.
Dulal - as a fellow BDi I feel compelled to tell you that the science that this woman is using for her "theories" have all turned out to be nonsense. Read the criticisms of her study by Andrew Gelman and Kaiser Fung, and the replication studies that failed to produce the same effect. One of the honest co-writers of her famous papers now agrees that the effect probably does not exist and was basically a spurious finding.
Disagree on so many levels. Firstly, to get rich you need to be confident in your capabilities to do the job that will get you that if you don't win a lotto. And frankly the ones who stay rich are the ones who can do that. Secondly, rich doesn't equate to confidence and from many life experiences many of the most unhappy people I know that are rich are so bc they lack confidence in their personal life and how they carry themselves and many of these people want something more than riches.......they want respect and people to see them as confident and someone important.
I had the phenomenal opportunity to participate in a three hour training with the inconceivable Tony Robbins. The energy in that room was Inconceivably!! What he discussed was the power of your State. How changing your mental, physical, and emotional states can impact the outcome of your life in an instant! Amazing insight!
I can vouch that this is great for depression and low motivation. I did this to try it out for an upcoming job interview and forgot about it. But I noticed not long after my depression had gone and I suddenly felt a rush of motivation. Feeling powerful does motivate you, which is the opposite of depression and worthlessness.
Seen Amy's talk at TED and thought it was interesting nonetheless.
Sidebar: Pretty dang surprised Time would use a ripped clipped from YouTube instead of taking the time, effort, and money to properly attain the rights to use the Wall Street clip from Fox. Same goes for the footage of the violinist. I don't recall seeing the filmmaker or source in the credits either.
IMO this sends the wrong message to the public in terms of copyright and fair use. At least give proper due credit to the content creators.
However, it was nice to see credits given to the photographers. At least they got something sort of right. They could have elaborated on what photographs belong to who. Just my opinion.
This is something all actors realize in terms of bringing powerful characters to life, but it's something they forget when they are waiting to audition or to present themselves to their agent. Great video! Very inspirational.
Only people who faced a challenging situations, and didn't gave up on themselves in order to prove to the world that they are capable of standing on their feets again. Most of them achieve a certain position that no one thought they would . Those are persons that we might think that only their luck or hard work made them so successful. u never know their real motive story!
I'm displeased. My cousin resides in the opposite room. I'm pissed because he as of late grew excellent with all women. He found the Master Attraction web page (Lookup in Google) by Jake Ayres. Now I hear him bringing chicks back. He's continuously having girls back. I can't help but hear it. It's gross and If only he had not found that site. My good friend just signed up and got a blowjob a week later. I'm green with envy!
I KNOW this is absolutely true- but seeing it proven scientifically is just awesome! I try to help people with a few stretching poses sometimes- something easy but to get them to breathe and spread out, I honestly believe in this as a therapy. Thanks so much to Dr. Carolyn Dean for showing me this link! Between this power pose and your minerals and vitamins,, on your way to feeling REBORN!
I read most of the replies but I just think it's a great clip. My younger brother just wishes to get amazing with women of all ages. He learned a lot from a web-site called Master Attraction. (Google it.) The information with regards to attracting girls through nightclubs in the emails from that website got got him his first sex encounters in around 3 yrs. I was really bothered however coz I heard them all. Nasty.
I think the message is not about affecting others, (dishonesty) but making a difference in yourself. If we make ourselves more confident, a side effect may be that people will treat us differently, but the goal is feeling better about ourselves.
Wonderful video clip. I stumbled upon this coz my pal became a lady-magnet - and he's overweight He began attracting chicks over night. I was stunned. He pretended he didn't realize. He ultimately came clean on Friday. He said he learned from the Jake Ayres Master Attraction Formula. Google it and you will find it... He's dating a sexy chick... Where are the most useful of these movies on Youtube?
As soon as people know this it loses half its power and deliberate posers become easy to manipulate themselves. Conscious deliberation shows when not a real language integrated through years of experience. Acting posing as reality = dishonesty, unless the poser is threatened and has no other recourse. I have a keen eye and possess personal integrity. Im motivated by real value and intention, not money or power. Playing such games with me kills my respect and mostly manages to earn my contempt.
I did a power-pose the whole video through and I literally could feel my testerone level rise :D I don't know if this really was the case but nevertheless I feel better now. I definitely will implement this in my life.
In an episode of the Dog Whisperer, he was walking a fearful dog, it's head low and tail tucked way under. He grabbed the tail and held it high. The dog's entire posture changed. The head went up, and the dog looked much happier.
Drops in the ocean...grains of sand...it adds up. Somethings it takes just one last little nudge to change course in a major way. In a book by Richard Bach, it was suggested that we truly are deep within that which we most admire. The greater deception of ourselves and others is to deny the good within. Years ago, I admired a person with an "on top of the world" affect and posture. I practiced it for a while, then let it go, suspecting I was being a bit of an imposter.
Some have been fooled by oppressive posers (who decieve) into thinking they are 'less' than their potential... So Amy postulates and proves by science that the playing field can be adjusted in favor of their higher potential. Your comment highlights that there ARE oppressive posers (who decieve), of whom we SHOULD be aware, but clearly Amy is not putting forth this technique for the purpose of deception. What fun to level the playing field, yes, it truly can be a Game Changer!
I really enjoyed watching this inspiring video and learn about your research. This is one of my favourite work areas work, interactions of people within our intercultural world. keep up the good work Amy ;-)
I did pay attention that's why I commented. There are plenty of idiots posing as something else whole their lives. I am not dumb clearly you are. You say she is powerful? :)) this idea is very old I know it for about 10 years, and I saw people that can't realize that they didn't became anything but they live with the lie, and their friends are laughing behind their backs. Clearly you don't know much about the subject, I suggest searching some more before you open your mouth.
If you believe this then you have not listened or understood the concept. Her experiments have proven that physiology can change psychology and that can change behavior and therefore desired outcomes. ie: you BECOME what you are pretending to be.
Sure, humans can change their body language to adapt to different social situations, while not changing at all inside. Take Ted Bundy, for instance. Reading body language is useful up to a point. Facts speak louder than anything. Actions speak the loudest.
Hi Chinouyamale, thanks for your comment. I have enormous respect for Michelle Obama, and my point was, indeed, that the editors posed her (and countless other women) this way to make her seem disarming and girlish. Unfortunately, when many hours of film are edited down to six minutes, many of the things you communicated don't make the cut. But, all in all, I think the editors did an amazing job getting the message right.
I wished that you had added an addendum to your criticism on mrs obama physical stance.the reason I guess why you think she took the mag cover pic that way is because the editor's goal was to convey the 1st lady as a non threatening woman. This is due to the overwhelming negative criticism she has received from a segment in society who is ignorant and racist.I think you were trying to say this was a mistake to portay her in this matter.next time, say it better.however, great work.I learned a lot
Erectile Dysfunction, or ED, is a condition of a male’s penis that prevents it from getting an erection from sexual intercourse. However, many male patients get this condition from many pre existing health problems. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or the NCCAM, released that ED affects nearly 30 million males in the United States alone. In most patients, certain drugs can single handedly treat the condition. Below, is a list of different antibiotics used to treat ED and what side effects you may get, as well as what other treatments your doctor might prescribe you. Comprehensive List of Erectile Dysfunction Drugs Viagra, Cialis, Levitra
