I call this the “non-exercise” exercise because it requires no gym, equipment or even real movement. Now, some of you may have heard of this. Unfortunately most do it incorrectly. Kegel exercises are done to strengthen the perineal muscles. To “flex” this muscle, it’s very simple. One way to describe how to do it is, by contracting your anus muscle, as if you’re trying to hold in gas. Go ahead and give it a try now... Another way to do it is stop peeing midway through. Thus, as you’re peeing, “contract the muscle” that will STOP the pee, midway through. That’s it - that’s a kegel exercise. Super simple, but extremely effective. You can literally do it anywhere, anytime and nobody would know. Sets & Reps You should do kegel’s about 3x a week to start with. Over time, slowly build up to 5x weekly. Just don’t do it every single day because like any muscle, it requires rest to gain strength. Contract the muscle (holding in gas or stop peeing) and hold for 3-5 seconds. Relax for 1-2 seconds. That’s ONE repetition Do this 10 of these, for 10 repetitions. That’s ONE set Do one set of 10 repetitions, 3x weekly. Then maybe the next week do 2 sets of 10 reps and work up to 3 sets of 10 reps, 3x weekly. You can do it all at once, or break it up 2-3x daily. Nothing it set in stone. What matters is consistency, persistence and patience. This lining is called the endothelium and it regulates most of your cardiovascular health and blood flow. There are four major factors that damage this tissue leading to plaque formations and calcification. They are: high blood pressure high blood glucose or sugar levels cholesterol particularly LDL or Bad Cholesterol and Smoking Why is this important? Because it's estimated that 65% of all ED issues are caused by atherosclerosis, which is placque formations and arteriosclerosis, which is calcification of the vascular wall. Vitamins D3 and K2 directly address this damage. First, vitamin K2 has been shown to reverse arterial calcification helping to return more of the endothelium back into a healthy, functioning tissue. This results in improve nitric oxide production. Second, the production of nitric oxide by the endothelium is a calcium dependent reaction. The combination of vitamins D3 and K2 help to properly regulate calcium levels in your bloodstream to help optimize this nitric oxide product. Third, as you increase your nitric oxide production to high enough levels over a long enough period of time, this process initiates reparative mechanisms that heal additional damage done to the endothelium. This returns even more surface volume back into play resulting in even higher levels of nitric oxide production. This benefits both improved cardiovascular and sexual health. The role of nitric oxide in erectile dysfunction: implications for medical therapy. Erectile dysfunction is a common, multifactorial disorder that is associated with aging and a range of organic and psychogenic conditions, including hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and depression. Penile erection is a complex process involving psychogenic and hormonal input, and a neurovascular nonadrenergic, noncholinergic mechanism. Nitric oxide (NO) is believed to be the main vasoactive nonadrenergic, noncholinergic neurotransmitter and chemical mediator of penile erection. Released by nerve and endothelial cells in the corpora cavernosa of the penis, NO activates soluble guanylyl cyclase, which increases 3',5'-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels. Acting as a second messenger molecule, cGMP regulates the activity of calcium channels as well as intracellular contractile proteins that affect the relaxation of corpus cavernosum smooth muscle. Impaired NO bioactivity is a major pathogenic mechanism of erectile dysfunction. Treatment of erectile dysfunction often requires combinations of psychogenic and medical therapies, many of which have been only moderately successful in the past. The advent of oral phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors, however, has greatly enhanced erectile dysfunction treatment; patients have demonstrated high tolerability and success rates for improved erectile function. The efficacy of the PDE-5 inhibitors also serves to illustrate the importance of the NO-cGMP pathway in erectile function since these agents counteract the degradation of NO-generated cGMP. Because not all patients respond to PDE-5 inhibitors, additional therapies are being investigated, such as soluble guanylyl cyclase activators and NO donors, which act on NO-independent and NO-dependent pathways, respectively.

How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc.
