Child Dyslexia Symptoms, Causes, & Treatments

03:07
What Is Dyslexia? Children with dyslexia have problems processing the information they see when looking at a word. Often a dyslexic child will have trouble connecting the sound made by a specific letter or deciphering the sounds of all the letters together that form a word. Given these challenges, children with dyslexia often also have trouble with basic skills like writing, spelling, speaking, and math.  Signs and Symptoms of Dyslexia in Children Children with dyslexia can have mild to severe impairment. Signs of the condition vary widely from person to person. Young children with dyslexia may have the following signs and symptoms: • A late talker • Pronunciation problems • Difficulty rhyming words • Impaired ability to learn basics such as the alphabet, colours, and numbers • Problems with handwriting and other fine motor skills • Confusing letters such as "b" and "d" or the orders of letters within words • Trouble learning the connection between letters and their sounds Causes of Dyslexia Researchers have found that dyslexia is caused by a difference in the way the dyslexic brain processes information. Experts do not know precisely what causes dyslexia, but several recent studies now indicate that genetics plays a major role. If you or your partner has dyslexia, you are more likely to have children with dyslexia. Over the next few decades, we are likely to learn much more about dyslexia and how to treat it. How to Help Children with Dyslexia There is no cure for dyslexia. But early intervention can give children with dyslexia the encouragement and tools they need to manage in school and compensate for their disability. If you suspect that your child has dyslexia or another learning disability, talk with your paediatrician as soon as possible. Your doctor can rule out any physical issues -- such as vision problems -- in your child. They may then refer you to a learning specialist, educational psychologist, or speech therapist. The first step will be to have your child evaluated so you can take the appropriate steps at school and at home. Most children with dyslexia can learn to read, and many can remain in a regular classroom, but they will need help to do so. Usually, learning specialists use a variety of techniques to work with children with dyslexia on an ongoing basis. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, children with dyslexia are allowed special accommodations in the classroom, such as additional time for tests and other types of support. Preventing Obesity in Children

02:04
What Causes Obesity in Children? Children become overweight and obese for a variety of reasons. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. Only in rare cases is being overweight caused by a medical condition such as a hormonal problem. A physical exam and some blood tests can rule out the possibility of a medical condition as the cause for obesity. Although weight problems run in families, not all children with a family history of obesity will be overweight. Children whose parents or brothers or sisters are overweight may be at an increased risk of becoming overweight themselves, but this can be linked to shared family behaviors such as eating and activity habits. A child's total diet and activity level play an important role in determining a child's weight. Today, many children spend a lot time being inactive. For example, the average child spends approximately four hours each day watching television. As computers and video games become increasingly popular, the number of hours of inactivity may increase. What Diseases Are Obese Children at Risk For? Obese children are at risk for a number of conditions, including: High cholesterol High blood pressure Early heart disease Diabetes Bone problems Skin conditions such as heat rash, fungal infections, and acne How Can I Help My Overweight Child? If you have an overweight child, it is very important that you allow him or her to know that you will be supportive. Children's feelings about themselves often are based on their parents' feelings about them, and if you accept your children at any weight, they will be more likely to feel good about themselves. It is also important to talk to your children about their weight, allowing them to share their concerns with you. It is not recommended that parents set children apart because of their weight. Instead, parents should focus on gradually changing their family's physical activity and eating habits. By involving the entire family, everyone is taught healthful habits and the overweight child does not feel singled out. Fainting (Syncope): Get the Facts on Causes

01:51
Syncope - is the medical term for fainting or passing out. It is caused by a temporary drop in the amount of blood that flows to the brain. Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) is one of the most common causes of fainting. Vasovagal syncope occurs when your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. The vasovagal syncope trigger causes a sudden drop in your heart rate and blood pressure. That leads to reduced blood flow to your brain, which results in a brief loss of consciousness. Vasovagal syncope is usually harmless and requires no treatment. But it's possible you may injure yourself during a vasovagal syncope episode. Also, your doctor may recommend tests to rule out more-serious causes of fainting, such as heart disorders. Symptoms Before you faint due to vasovagal syncope, you may experience some of the following: Skin paleness Lightheadedness Tunnel vision — your field of vision is constricted so that you see only what's in front of you Nausea Feeling of warmth A cold, clammy sweat Yawning Blurred vision During a vasovagal syncope episode, bystanders may notice: Jerky, abnormal movements A slow, weak pulse Dilated pupils Recovery after a vasovagal episode begins soon after fainting, generally in less than a minute. However, if you stand up too soon after fainting — within 15 to 30 minutes or so — you're at risk of fainting again. When to see a doctor Because fainting can be a sign of a more serious condition, such as a heart or brain disorder, you may want to consult your doctor after a fainting spell, especially if you never had one before. Causes Vasovagal syncope occurs when the part of your nervous system that regulates heart rate and blood pressure malfunctions in response to a trigger, such as the sight of blood. Your heart rate slows, and the blood vessels in your legs widen. This allows blood to pool in your legs, which lowers your blood pressure. This drop in blood pressure and slowed heart rate quickly diminish blood flow to your brain, and you faint. Common triggers for vasovagal syncope include: Standing for long periods of time Heat exposure The sight of blood Having blood drawn Fear of bodily injury Straining, such as to have a bowel movement Subscribe! http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyEm91Ch1cOtmmF3jqJE7ag?sub_confirmation=1 mDhil Med provides health series and interviews with top notch doctors and health experts to break down taboos and health myths. Cesarean Section - Why It Is Done?

04:05
"Cesarean Section - Why It Is Done Some cesarean deliveries are planned ahead of time. Others are done when a quick delivery is needed to ensure the mother's and infant's well-being. Planned cesarean Some cesarean sections are planned when a known medical problem would make labor dangerous for the mother or baby. Medical reasons for a planned cesarean may include: A fetus in any position that is not head-down (including breech position). Decreased blood supply to the placenta before birth, which may lead to a small baby. Estimated fetal size of over 9 lb (4.1 kg) to 10 lb (4.5 kg) or more. A maternal disease or condition that may be made worse by the stress of labor. One example is heart disease. A known health problem with the baby, such as spina bifida. A placenta that is blocking the cervix (placenta previa). Open sores from active genital herpes near the due date, which can be passed to the fetus during vaginal delivery. Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which can be passed to the fetus during vaginal delivery. Multiple pregnancy. The direction and size of the incision depends on the position of the fetuses. In particular, cesarean delivery may be needed for multiple births involving: Twins that share one amniotic sac (monoamniotic twins), because of the risk that the cords will get tangled. Three fetuses or more. Twins that are joined by any part of the body (conjoined). An overstretched uterus that cannot contract adequately during labor (uterine inertia), making labor prolonged and difficult. Poorly positioned or large fetuses. Many cesarean deliveries are planned ahead of time for women who have had a cesarean in the past. Medical reasons for a planned repeat cesarean may include: A current problem that has led to difficult labor and cesarean before, such as a narrow pelvis and a large fetus (cephalopelvic disproportion). Factors that increase the risk of uterine rupture during labor, such as having a vertical scar, triplets or more, or a very large fetus thought to weigh 9 lb (4.1 kg)to 10 lb (4.5 kg) or more. No access to constant medical supervision by a cesarean-trained doctor during active labor, or no available facilities for an emergency cesarean. Some women request to have a C-section even though there is no medical need for it. Experts don't agree on whether C-sections should be done when there is no medical reason. Most mothers and babies do well after C-section. But it's major surgery, and major surgery has some risks. A Patient's Guide to Living With Atrial Fibrillation

02:12
What Is Atrial Fibrillation? Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of irregular heartbeat. It is found in about 2.2 million Americans. Its frequency increases with age. If you have AF, the electrical impulse does not travel in an orderly fashion through the atria. Instead, many impulses begin simultaneously and spread through the atria and compete for a chance to travel through the AV node. The firing of these impulses results in a very rapid and disorganized heartbeat. The rate of impulses through the atria can range from 300 to 600 beats per minute. Luckily, the AV node limits the number of impulses it allows to travel to the ventricles. As a result, the pulse rate is often less than 150 beats per minute, but this is often fast enough to cause symptoms. What Are the Symptoms of Atrial Fibrillation? You may have atrial fibrillation without having any symptoms at all. If you have symptoms, they may include: Heart palpitations (a sudden pounding, fluttering, or racing feeling in the chest) Fatigue or lack of energy Dizziness (feeling faint or light-headed) Chest discomfort (pain, pressure, or tightness in the chest) Shortness of breath (difficulty breathing during normal activities or even at rest) What Causes Atrial Fibrillation? Atrial fibrillation is associated with many conditions, including: High blood pressure Coronary artery disease(blockages in the heart's arteries) Heart valve disease Previous heart surgery Chronic lung disease Heart failure Cardiomyopathy (disease of heart muscle that causes heart failure) Congenital heart disease (heart disease present at birth) Pulmonary embolism (blood clot in lungs) Less common causes of atrial fibrillation include: Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) Pericarditis (inflammation of the outside lining of the heart) Viral infection In at least 10% of people with AF, no underlying heart disease is found. In many of these people, AF may be related to alcohol or excessive caffeine use, stress, certain drugs, electrolyte or metabolic imbalances, or severe infections. In some people, no cause can be found. The risk of AF increases with age, particularly after age 60. According to the CDC, AF affects roughly one in every 10 people ages 80 and older. Why Is Atrial Fibrillation Dangerous? Many people live for years with atrial fibrillation without problems. However, because the atria are beating rapidly and irregularly, blood does not flow through them as quickly. This makes the blood more likely to clot. If a blood clot is pumped out of the heart, it can travel to the brain, resulting in a stroke. The likelihood of a stroke in people with AF is five to seven times higher than in the general population. Although about half of all blood clots related to AF result in stroke, clots can travel to other parts of the body -- such as the kidney, heart, or intestines -- also causing problems. How Is Atrial Fibrillation Diagnosed? Four tests are used to diagnose atrial fibrillation, including: Electrocardiogram Holter monitor Portable event monitor (also called a loop recorder) Transtelephonic monitor or wireless monitor (via the Internet) These monitoring devices help your doctor learn if you are having irregular heartbeats, what kind they are, how long they last, and what may be causing them. How Is Atrial Fibrillation Treated? Many options are available to treat AF, including medication, lifestyle changes, certain medical procedures, and surgery. The choice of treatment for you is based on your heart rate and symptoms. The goals of AF treatment are to: Regain normal heart rhythm (sinus rhythm) Control the heart rate Prevent blood clots Reduce the risk of stroke Check out articles at http://www.mdhil.com Facebook us: http://www.facebook.com/mdhil Tweet us: http://www.twitter.com/mdhil

Raising Children with Cerebral Palsy

01:52
Caring for a Child With Cerebral Palsy It isn't easy raising and caring for a child with cerebral palsy, but that doesn't mean you are helpless. You can be your child's best advocate in the months and years to come, ensuring that he or she gets the care that's needed. The more you know, the better prepared you will be to help your child. This is particularly important in the case of cerebral palsy, which is a complex condition with a broad range of possible symptoms and complications. The good news is that there are now many options for children with cerebral palsy and their parents/caregivers in terms of medical and surgical treatments, practical help and social care support, as well as a wealth of information resources. What Is Cerebral Palsy? Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term for a group of neurological disorders that appear early in life. They permanently affect the individual's ability to coordinate movement. Abnormalities in the brain cause cerebral palsy, although often, no specific cause can be found. Cerebral palsy is usually not progressive; that is, it does not tend to get worse with age. Recent studies have found that most children with cerebral palsy are born with it, although doctors may not diagnose the condition until a child is a few years old. These are other possible causes of cerebral palsy: Genetic or metabolic abnormalities Fetal injury Maternal infection, such as rubella, during pregnancy Birth complications Head injury within the first few months of life Brain infections, such as bacterial meningitis or encephalitis Although there has been considerable research into the condition, there is still much that is not known about cerebral palsy and its origins. Signs of Cerebral Palsy The signs of cerebral palsy usually develop before a child turns age 3. The parent of a child with cerebral palsy is usually the first to notice these signs, and to realize that the child is not developing normally. The signs of cerebral palsy vary widely and can range from mild to severe. Some people with the condition are intellectually impaired, but many have no mental deficits at all. Early signs of cerebral palsy include: Developmental delay: An infant with cerebral palsy may not learn to sit or walk or reach other developmental milestones at the appropriate age. Abnormal muscle tone: Theinfant's body typically seems very stiff, though it may appear overly relaxed and floppy. Unusual posture or body position Treatment for Children with Cerebral Palsy There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but early intervention can measurably improve your child's ability to manage the condition.
