Will I bleed when I lose my virginity?

01:35
No, not always. When a woman has penetrative sex for the first time, she may bleed and feel some pain because of her hymen breaking. The hymen is a very thin piece of skin that partially covers (and sometimes completely covers) the entrance to the vagina. It usually breaks during sexual intercourse if it hasn’t already broken before this. The hymen can break quite easily before a woman has sex for the first time, through: activities such as horse riding and other sports. A woman may not know that her hymen has broken because it doesn’t always cause pain or noticeable bleeding. If a woman's hymen breaks before she has had sex, it does not mean that she isn't a virgin. It is therefore normal for a woman not to bleed the first time she has sex. Bleeding during sex can also be caused by vaginal dryness, insertion of objects such as sex toys, or rough sex. Worried About Your Swollen Feet During Pregnancy? Find Relief!

02:21
Dr. Beena Jeysingh, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Motherhood hospital, Bangalore India, speaks about a common condition of swollen feet during the pregnancy. In this video, she has explained the reasons and tips to reduce the swelling. “Swelling is a part of the bodily changes occurring during pregnancy. It is a normal condition, which goes away after delivery. Towards the end of the second and the third trimester, a woman starts retaining body fluid, which is noticeable as the swelling of ankles, feet, and legs”, explains Dr. Beena Jeysingh. Swelling has an important role to play during pregnancy. The excess body fluid helps soften the body, which is required so as to accommodate the developing baby. Water retention is also needed to prepare the pelvic tissues and joints to open up for delivery. Swelling is caused as a result of the enlarging uterus (due to the growing baby) putting additional pressure on the veins, which in turn hinders the blood circulation. The drastic hormonal changes also contribute to the water retention in the body. Dr. Beena Jeysingh has shared some tips that help reduce the swelling during pregnancy: Avoid standing for longs hours. Take a break at regular intervals. Walk around your home or while at work. Do not exert yourself. Do simple foot and ankle exercise. Rotate your ankle and feet now and then. You can ask your doctor to recommend a compression stocking to support your legs. Wear comfortable and flat footwear. Elevate your feet by putting it on a stool or place pillow underneath. Keep yourself well hydrated. Drink water to reduce water retention. However, if you experience any sudden swelling along with severe headaches, blurred vision, nausea, consult your doctor immediately. This can be a sign of pre-eclampsia, which is a serious medical condition in pregnancy. Modasta provides you authenticated health care articles, information and doctor videos. What Are The Complications Related To Placenta Previa? Learn More!

02:01
Dr Beena Jeysingh, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Motherhood hospital, Bangalore India, explains the complications related to placenta previa and what are the options available to the doctors. The placenta previa or the low-lying placenta is not a major cause of worry for a pregnant lady, as most of the cases resolve themselves with time, posing no threat to the developing baby or the mother. However, sometimes there can be certain cases wherein the low lying placenta does not move upwards and continues to cover a partial or total of the uterine opening (internal OS). If a woman is presented with either of these cases, the doctors typically recommend caution and bed rest to them. Few of the pregnant women with placenta praevia may have vaginal bleeding ranging from light to medium flow. A heavy vaginal bleeding is uncommon but requires a blood transfusion to the mother. Such condition is associated with the cases wherein the placenta is partially or completely covering the internal OS of the uterus and the cervix. Most of the women are advised a Caesarian section delivery with persisting placenta previa. Other complications of the low-lying placenta, if it persists towards the end of the gestation period are, need to deliver the baby preterm and hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) due to non-expulsion of the placenta after delivery. A placenta is normally expelled after the delivery. But placenta accreta, placenta increta and placenta percreta are the conditions wherein the placenta remains attached to the uterus, which poses a serious health concern to the mother. The only treatment of these conditions is by removing the uterus. Placenta accreta: The placenta remains attached firmly in the uterus. Placenta increta: The placenta grows into the walls of the uterus. Placenta percreta: The placenta crosses the walls of the uterus and grows beyond. ” Only placenta accreta, increta and perceta are the major causes of concern when it comes to low lying placenta. But then, it is a very rare occurrence. Unfortunately, the last option left for treatment is hysterectomy, i.e. the removal of the uterus”, says Dr Beena Jeysingh. It is advisable to take proper bed rest, avoid physical exertion or exercises, refrain from sexual intercourse, avoid constipation and get treated for cough if any. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience vaginal bleeding accompanied with uterine contraction, or abdominal pain. What Happens If You’ve Placenta Previa? Know More!

01:26
Dr. Beena Jeysingh, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Motherhood hospital, Bangalore India, explains the term placenta previa in layman’s language to help us understand this common pregnancy condition in detail. The placenta is an organ that nurtures and sustains the pregnancy. It is an organ of support through which the growing foetus receives oxygenated blood and nutrients from the mother and excretes out its wastes. Typically, the placenta is attached to the upper portion of the uterus. If it is attached to the lower part of the uterus, it is termed as placenta previa. Placenta previa is a commonly occurring condition in expecting women, also referred to as low-lying placenta. It is usually detected in the 18-20 weeks of pregnancy through an ultrasonography. The placenta might be too close to the cervix and may partially or totally cover it. Few women might experience vaginal bleeding for this very reason. The cause of placenta previa is still unknown. Women who are aged above 35 years, smoke or use drugs, have had a previous delivery, are carrying multiples, had a surgery of the uterus are at risk of placenta previa. “There is absolutely no need to worry if you have been diagnosed with placenta previa. At the most, your doctor will advise you to be cautious with physical exertion or bed rest for sometimes. Most of the cases of placenta previa resolve with time when the uterus stretches up as the baby grows. By default, the placenta moves away from the cervix and condition is corrected”, says Dr Beena Jeysingh. In very rare cases, the condition might not improve with time. Your doctor would then take a call on the mode of delivery based on your wellbeing and the risk associated with it. Follow your doctor’s advice on placenta previa. It does no harm in being a little bit more careful. Modasta provides you authenticated health care articles, information and doctor videos. Get the accurate healthcare information. Why my pregnancy test result came negative?

01:42
Dr. Apoorva Pallam Reddy, Gynaecologist at Mathrutva Fertility Centre, Bangalore, India explains the reasons that are responsible for a negative pregnancy test, even though you may have symptoms of pregnancy. The home pregnancy test kits are a relatively accurate method of confirming pregnancy if the test is conducted as per the instructions mentioned on the kit. These pregnancy test kits are sensitive to the pregnancy hormone, hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), This hormone is produced by the placenta once the fertilized egg, is successfully implanted in the uterus. The hCG level increases for the first three months of pregnancy and then falls to low levels for the rest of the duration. “The most important reason for persistent negative pregnancy result is that you are not pregnant in that particular month. The whole cycle of ovulation, fertilization and conception need to be perfectly timed for a successful pregnancy.” It is not uncommon to get inaccurate results through pregnancy test kits. Some of the reason for getting negative test results could be: Urine sample other than the first-morning urine: The first urine of the day is the perfect sample for testing as it contains a high level of hCG. Urine other than the morning urine is diluted and may not have sufficient levels of hCG for pregnancy detection. A pregnancy test should be done ideally after a week of the missing period. Not adhering to the instructions: Many women fail to follow the instruction correctly, which could give be a reason for a negative result. Improper position of the testing stick: The testing kit should always be placed on a flat surface for testing. Tilted testing stick may hamper the result. Consuming lot of fluids before testing: Diluted urine is not considered a very good sample for testing pregnancy. The hormone hCG could become negligible and fail to get detected. Using an expired pregnancy test kit: A pregnancy test kit that has surpassed its best before use date could no longer be sensitive enough to detect the pregnancy hormone. Pre-Pregnancy Counselling – Advice And Management

01:41
Dr. Swapna Ramalingachar, Gynaecologist, Apollo Cradle Hospital, Bangalore, India, has explained about the need and importance of pre-pregnancy counselling to a couple, planning to start a family. The hectic work life balance does not leave much of a personal time for couples. Most of the time couples fail to conceive. Misconceptions with regards to periods, the safe and unsafe days can lead to unnecessary stress. Apart from this, it is very important to assess the general health of both the partner to rule out any medical condition that might pose a challenge to a healthy pregnancy. A mother’s health is very critical as it decides the wellbeing of the baby. A pre-pregnancy counselling addresses all these concerns one on one. Your doctor will advise on the best days to land up with a successful pregnancy. You will also be tested for certain common infections that may be harmful to the baby. The couple will be guided on several issues to help them succeed. Diet modification, fitness regime, cutting down addiction, vaccinations for some health issues, genetic testing, medical history, medications are some of the main points of a pre-pregnancy counselling. A mother to be is prescribed vitamins during the prenatal period, to prepare her body and keep her healthy for the future bodily changes. Couples are advised to try conceiving during the unsafe or fertile days of a menstrual cycle, which ideally is during the 11-18 days of the cycle. This is the time when the ovary releases a mature egg, which can be fertilised by a sperm. “It is advisable to consult a gynaecologist if a couple is planning a baby. There are certain aspects that need testing and vaccinations to be sure of a healthy pregnancy. Genetics testing is one of the most important aspects for a couple, if they have a family history of genetic disorders. Also, we advise prenatal vitamins to women so that her general health gives a strong base for the 9 months of pregnancy”, explains Dr. Swapna Ramalingachar. These counselling are helpful for both the partners to educate them on the timings, do’s and don’ts of pregnancy planning. How does Dwikonasana relieve tired shoulders after a long day at work? Know more! | Desk Yoga

01:25
In this, the legs are about two feet apart. The arms go behind the body and the fingers are interlocked. Breathe in and breathe out by bending forward from the hips, and not by curving the spine. You can bend the legs if the hamstrings are tight. Bring the trunk parallel to the floor. The arms rest on the back as you finish the exhale. Now with the trunk parallel to the floor and the arms behind you, breathe in and lift the arms up off the back. Raise them as high as they will go. At the same time, lift the head and look ahead. Breathe out as the arms come onto the back and the head looks down at the floor again. Breathe in and lift up to a standing position. Breathe out and relax. This asana is great to work the shoulders, bend the spine and stretch the legs, all in one neat package. When we sit at the computer or do any repetitive action for long periods of time, the shoulders can get tight. This helps to release the shoulders and bends the spine. To remember: if you feel light-headed, it’s best to not do this pose, until you feel better. This asana helps to relieve frozen shoulder and tight arms. If it is difficult to keep the arms held together for a long period of time, then using a towel, rope or another prop will not strain muscles. In time, the body will adapt and you can bring the hands together. Modasta provides you authenticated health care articles, information and doctor videos. Get the accurate healthcare information. What Causes Allergic Conjunctivitis?

02:59
Dr. Sean S Da Silva, Medical Superintendent, Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgeon, The Eye Foundation, Bangalore, India, explains the causes and treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. He also advises on some of the do's and don'ts for individuals suffering from it. Allergic conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the thin and clear membrane (conjunctiva) that covers the eyeball due to an allergy-causing agent. The eyes release the chemical histamine whenever they are exposed to an allergen, resulting in watery, swollen, itchy, red eyes. It is not contagious. “School-going children are very vulnerable to this type of conjunctivitis. Most kids pick up the allergens from their school, playgrounds or home. Some of the commonest allergens are pollen, animal dander, mold, dust, perfume, cosmetics, smoke, certain eye drops, etc.” Allergic conjunctivitis tends to affect both the eyes at the same time with the same severity. Allergic conjunctivitis can be: Perennial (all year-round): It is mostly in reaction to an animal dander, mold spores or dust mites. Seasonal: It is mostly reported in dry and windy season. Air-borne allergens such as pollen are the main culprits. Prevention Removing the allergens is the best way to avoid frequent episodes of allergic conjunctivitis: Get rid of dust mites: Remove carpets. Disinfecting bedding, pillows and mattresses help. Avoid pets: Dog and cat dander are well-known allergens. e The doctor will usually prescribe eye drops or medication to reduce the inflammation. Lubricating eye drops can be prescribed to wash away the allergens. Applying cold compresses to the eyes helps in easing the pain. Why Does My Child Get Fits During Fever?

01:33
"Dr. Sayed Mujahid Husain, Paediatrician with Apollo Medical Centre, Bangalore, India, explains the phenomenon of seizures during high fever in few children. Dr Sayed assures that the seizures are harmless and parent should not panic if their child has experienced a fit recently. When high fever above 102o F in a child below the age of five is accompanied by fits or convulsions, it is known as febrile seizures. Here febrile means feverish. It is caused by a sudden rise in the temperature usually due to a viral infection. One should not confuse it with epilepsy. It typically involves: • Loss of consciousness • Breathing difficulties • Rolling back of the eyes • Excessive saliva • Sudden jerky movements of limbs • Moaning or crying Here is a list of do’s and don’t during febrile seizures: • Lie your child on the floor on his sides • Remove anything that might hurt him/her • Loosen any tight clothing • Put a soft pillow under his/her head • Note down the time duration of seizure • Do not put anything in his/her mouth • Don’t try to hold down your child Around 8-10% of the children below the age of 5 are vulnerable to febrile seizures. These seizures can be frightening but are harmless. My advice to the parents is to remain calm in such circumstances, let the child settle down first. Do not try anything without consulting a paediatrician. Your doctor is the best person to evaluate the seizure. If need be, proper medical treatment would be advised henceforth. It might look very scary seeing your child in fits, but there are no health issues or long-term complications from it. However, if the seizure continues longer than 15 minutes or your child has repeated episodes of fits, reach out to your doctor immediately. What is normal weight gain during pregnancy? Know more!

01:17
Dr. Apoorva Pallam Reddy, Gynaecologist at Mathrutva Fertility Centre, Bangalore, India advises on the ideal range of weight gain during pregnancy. She also clarifies on the common misconception of eating for two for a pregnant lady. “Eating for two” has been considered the only motto for a pregnant woman. In reality “eating well” should be the only concern of a pregnant woman. “Excessive weight gain during pregnancy is not a good idea. It may lead to complications at the time of delivery and may become a cause of developing gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and risk of C-section delivery. 11-15 kg of weight should be the ideal weight gain for pregnant women.” A more methodical way of weight gain by pregnancy, early or pre-pregnancy (10 weeks) body mass index (BMI) is: For underweight women (BMI 18.5) should aim for 12.5-18 kg of weight gain. Healthy weight woman (BMI 18.5–24.9) should aim at 11.5–16 kg of weight gain. Overweight women (BMI 25-29.9) should gain 7-11.5 kg of weight. Obese women (BMI of 30), should aim for a weight gain of 5-9 kg. In case you are expecting twins, your doctor would want you to gain extra kgs of weight to ensure healthy babies. Follow these simple tips to gain sensible weight during your pregnancy: Eat healthy nutritious food and fruits. Stay hydrated with plain water. Avoid sugary juices and drinks. Snack healthy whenever you have to. Give in to cravings, but pay attention to the quantity. Eat homemade food as much as possible. Indulge in mild exercise after consulting with your doctor. Is papaya (papita) safe for pregnant women?

00:56
Dr. Apoorva Pallam Reddy, Gynaecologist at Mathrutva Fertility Centre, Bangalore, India talks about a common misconception related to papaya and its abortion-inducing properties. Since time immemorial, a pregnant lady in the Indian subcontinent is always warned against eating papaya, for fear of miscarriage. Papaya is considered as a natural abortifacient, meaning an abortion-inducing agent. Only unripe or raw papaya has a uterotonic principle, which can evoke sustained contractions of the uterus. The miscarriage-inducing agent is slightly higher in raw papaya than other fruits but is said to be not high enough to abort a foetus. “Unripe or semi-ripe papayas are rich in a substance called latex. This concentrated form of latex can trigger uterine contractions. Also, papaya skin and seeds must not be consumed.” In fact, a ripe papaya is very rich in vitamin A, C E and beta-carotene, a good source of folic acid and fibre. What is the right method to burp my baby?

01:31
"Dr. Sayed Mujahid Husain, Paediatrician with Apollo Medical Centre, Bangalore, India explains the right way to burp a baby. Breastfed babies swallow less air than the bottle-fed babies. Releasing the air from the bottom and burping are the ways to get rid of the trapped air from the stomach. When a baby is visibly very fussy and in discomfort, he/she might refuse to feed in between if not burped well. The digestive system of a newborn baby is still developing and adjusting. Unlike adults, they need assistance to give them a burp to settle the feed in their stomach. By 4-6 months of age, most babies become more efficient feeders and may not require burping. Here are three different ways to burp a baby: 1. Put your baby over your shoulder. Pat your baby’s back gently after every feed or in between the feed. 2. Hold your child on your lap in a sitting position. Support his or her chin. Your hand should be placed on his or her chest. With the other hand pat the back. 3. Make your baby lie down on his or her tummy. You should support their head and make sure their head is higher than their chest. Gently pat the baby’s back. Regurgitation of milk is seen in some children. This normal flow of milk from their mouth should not be confused with vomiting. It may happen more than once in a day, simply implying that the baby is not burped well. In case your child is crying for more than an hour, and nothing seems to work, it could be a case of colic. It is very common to spit out some milk while burping. This is very normal and should not be a matter of concern. Sometimes your baby may wake up crying due to the discomfort of being gassy. Is burping babies necessary? Modasta provides you authenticated health care articles, information and doctor videos. Get the accurate healthcare information. What Causes Conjunctivitis?

03:11
Dr. Sean S Da Silva, Medical Superintendent, Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive surgeon, The Eye Foundation, Bangalore India, explains some facts about conjunctivitis (pink eye). Conjunctivitis refers to the inflammation of the thin transparent layer of the eye (conjunctiva). It is a common eye infection often seen in school-going kids. It is very contagious, and can easily infect others. The infection can occur either in one eye or both. It can take up to 2 weeks to clear away. A viral infection is the leading cause of conjunctivitis. Other than a virus, bacteria, pollen, smoke, some ingredients of the eye makeup, chlorine of the swimming pool, lens solutions and contact lenses are some of the causes of conjunctivitis. The most common symptoms of conjunctivitis are: Itching or burning sensation in one or both the eyes Swelling in the eyes Excessive tearing Redness Sensitivity towards light “Contrary to the popular belief, conjunctivitis does not spread by looking at the infected eye. Touching contaminated personal items of the infected individual is the main reason for its spread. Use disposable tissues or handkerchiefs to clean the watery discharge from the eyes. Following personal hygiene and staying away from others are the best measures to stop the infection from spreading.” Self-care tips Apply warm compresses to the eyes, to ease away the discomfort. In case, you have allergic conjunctivitis, apply cold compresses. Avoid touching/rubbing your eyes. Stop using any eye makeup. Discard any old mascara or kajal that might have caused the infection. Don’t share personal items with anyone. Change your towels and handkerchiefs daily. Your doctor might prescribe eye drops to alleviate the symptoms or other medication depending on the cause. Do not try to self-treat the condition; it could lead to further complications. Modasta provides you authenticated health care articles, information and doctor videos. What are the types of hypertension? Learn more!

02:39
Dr. Vaishak Vidyadhar, Physician with The Bangalore Hospital, Bangalore, India talks about hypertension or high blood pressure as known to non-specialists. “Hypertension is diagnosed by taking blood pressure measurements regularly. Most of us are not aware of being a hypertensive, thus put our heart and health at an increased risk of health complications. Fortunately, little lifestyle changes go a long way in keeping our blood pressure within normal range.” Based on the cause of hypertension, it is divided into two main categories: Essential or primary hypertension: Here the cause of the high blood pressure is unknown. People with this type of hypertension may experience frequent tiredness, dizziness, headache, or nose bleeds. Secondary hypertension: When the cause of the hypertension is known it is called as secondary hypertension. The common causes of secondary hypertensions are abnormalities in the arteries supplying blood to the kidney, thyroid diseases, hormonal abnormalities, airways blockage during sleep and certain medications. Know the blood pressure readings: Normal blood pressure: The normal blood pressure reading is below 120/80 mm Hg. Prehypertension: Readings, which have a systolic pressure within 120-139 mm Hg or a diastolic pressure of 80-89 mm Hg. Stage 1 hypertension: Systolic reading between 140- 159 mm Hg or diastolic reading within 90-99 mm Hg. Stage 2 hypertension: Severe cases of hypertension record systolic readings above 160 mm Hg and diastolic readings above 100 mm Hg. Adopting a healthy lifestyle and taking medications can very well manage hypertension. High blood pressure should not be taken lightly as it exerts unnecessary pressure on your heart and arteries. Menstrual hygiene tips every girl and woman should know

03:43
Dr. Seemanthini Desai, a leading microbiologist of Dr. Desai Microlab, Bengaluru has shared some menstrual hygiene tips that every girl/woman should follow. Apart from personal hygiene, females should be conscious of menstrual hygiene practices once they hit puberty. Menstrual hygiene does not only mean keeping one’s body clean, but it also includes disposing of the waste responsibly. One of the most significant challenges that women face during their periods is the taboo attached to it. This need for secrecy often leads to poor hygiene practices putting many of them at risk of increased infections. Menstruation is a healthy and normal phenomenon. One should not be ashamed of it every month. Follow these to see you through your periods in a healthy way: Opt for a safe and comfortable method of sanitation. Sanitary napkins are the most popular choice. But menstrual cups are also catching up. Do not use cloth as your sanitary pads. Change your sanitary napkins as often as required. If you do not bleed heavily even then, you should change your napkins at every 4-6 hours. Do not wait for it to get saturated. Dry your pubic area well to avoid rashes. Wash your genital areas frequently. Ideally, you should take a shower every day in during your periods. Also, wash your pubic area every time you are changing your napkin. In case you are not able to wash it, wipe it well. Always wipe from front to back. Keep your used napkins in a well-covered bin. Do not leave them lying in an open dustbin. If you are using menstrual cups, flush your waste well. Clean and disinfect the menstrual cup based on manufacturer’s instructions. How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

01:41
Dr. Seemanthini Desai, a leading microbiologist of Dr. Desai Microlab, Bengaluru, advises on the frequency of hair washes and why we should keep our scalp clean. Dirty and unkempt hair can ruin your personality and cause several hygiene-related health issues too. Even though the hair is made up of keratin, the skin of the scalp is very much alive and has active oil glands. Unwashed hair can become smelly due to the deposition of oil, dirt and dead cells, providing an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Greasy and oily hair can lead to fungal infection, then to dandruff. So how often should you wash your hair? Men with short hair can wash it every other day. Women and men with long hair should wash their hair every 3rd day. If you spend most of your time outdoors, you can wash your hair with a mild shampoo daily too. People who work out or experience more than normal sweating should wash their hair on a daily basis. If you use a lot of hair products, it’s advisable to wash them off as soon as possible. Most of the haircare products are full of chemicals that can harm your scalp’s health. Children should get their hair washed every alternate day or as and when required as they spend most of their time at play. During summers and monsoons, you may require frequent hair washes than in winters. You should keep your hair and scalp clean to be presentable and avoid any infections. How Does Naukasana Tone Up Your Abdomen? Know More! | Desk Yoga

01:45
This is known as the boat pose and is an asana that targets the abdomen. The abdomen is squeezed and held for a brief amount of time to strengthen the abdominal muscles (core). These muscles are important for keeping the back strong. Lie down on the mat on your back and relax in Shavasana for a few seconds. To begin the asana, bring the legs together and the arms close to the body. Tuck the chin slightly into the chest. Raise the arms to about a foot off the floor. Breathe in and raise the body up to a boat-like position. The legs are about half a foot off the floor and the upper body is about half a foot off the floor. Stay here for a few seconds and then gently bring the body down. This helps to build muscle control in the abdomen. Start with 3-5 rounds and build up from there. You can add levels of difficulty to build muscle strength in the core. When we sit or stand for long periods of time, we tend to ignore the stomach and back muscles that help us achieve good posture. Performing naukasana, strengthens these forgotten muscles that help us achieve good posture. Spending time on this also helps to eliminate fat from around the belly. This is also a very good pose to wake us up when we are very sleepy. To remember: This asana is great to wake the body up and instantly deepens the breath. It works best when the movement is from dynamic to static. In the beginning, do it dynamically and in time hold the pose for periods of time; to help build core strength. Remember not to do this on a full stomach. Modasta provides you authenticated health care articles, information and doctor videos. Get the accurate healthcare information. When can I take a home pregnancy test?

00:53
Dr. Apoorva Pallam Reddy, Gynaecologist at Mathrutva Fertility Centre, Bangalore, India advises on the best time to conduct a home pregnancy test. If you have been trying to conceive and are not sure of the calculation of your menstrual cycle, doing repeated pregnancy tests with negative results could be disheartening. It can become more confusing if a lady has been experiencing irregular menstrual cycles. Ideally, a woman should do a pregnancy test after she misses her period. Most of the times, the pregnancy test might turn out to be negative owing to the undetectable level of hCG in the urine. “The placenta start producing the pregnancy hormone hCG on successful implantation of the fertilized egg. The level of this hormone rises in your blood and is eliminated through your urine. Initially, the level of hCG is negligible and could be missed by the pregnancy test kit. But, a week after your missed period should be the best time to do the pregnancy test.” In case your test results are negative, it is advisable to do the test again after a few days. Alternatively, a blood test can be taken to detect the level of hCG. Remember, the blood test done for pregnancy is the best option to confirm the result. For women with irregular menstruation cycles, counting 4 weeks from the date of unprotected sex or 36 days from the starting of your last menstrual cycle is the appropriate time to do a pregnancy test. It is always advisable to consult a gynaecologist even after you had done the pregnancy test, irrespective of the result. A positive result would call for an early prenatal care, whereas a negative test should be discussed and evaluated by a gynaecologist. Alcoholism Treatment & Management

03:26
"Dr. B Kapur, Psychiatrist, Columbia Asia, Hospital Bangalore, India talks about the treatment and management of alcoholism. As per Dr. Kapur, not everyone who drinks is an alcoholic, as assumed by some of us. There is a difference in social drinking and alcoholism. Only when the alcohol consumption starts impairing an individual’s health, personal and professional life, it is termed as alcoholism. The successful treatment of alcoholism requires social support and motivation from their loved ones. There is a high chance of the person resorting back to alcoholism in the absence of these. An individual needs to be admitted to a rehabilitation centre for overcoming their chronic urges to drink. Most of the alcoholics fail to stop drinking because of the withdrawal symptoms they experience once the alcohol level in their blood becomes low. Medical treatment of alcoholism starts with medication and psychotherapy. Detoxification is the first and most difficult phase of the treatment as the person experiences a range of physical and psychological symptoms. Detoxification is done under a trained and experienced doctor. Detoxification is followed by rehabilitation that is done by counselling and other psychotherapies. The last stage is of maintenance of sobriety, which needs the support of family and friends. Psychiatry has a very comprehensive approach to treat alcoholism. The treatment for chronic alcohol cannot be done in a home setting; a person needs to be kept in a de-addiction centre or institute. A major requirement for treating alcoholism successfully is that an individual is aware of its side effects and is a willing partner in the treatment”, says Dr. Kapur. Remember, alcoholism is a curable disorder. All it needs is a timely intervention, love and support of the family to bring an individual back to a normal life.
