Artemisinin: A Cancer Smart Bomb by Len Saputo, MD

06:37
Wormwood is a Chinese herb that is thousands of years old that has applications for malaria and cancer treatment. It is safe, easy to use, affordable, and has great promise in the treatment of cancer. Cancer cells and bacteria accumulate iron far more than normal cells. Artemisinin works in the presence of iron to create free radicals that kill cells that hoard iron. Leukemia cells concentrate iron 1000 times normal lymphocytes and breast cancer concentrates iron 15 times a normal breast cell. There are three forms of wormwood extract: artemisinin, artsunate, and artemether. It can be given either orally or by rectal suppository and should be pulsed with several days on and several off if taken by mouth because of intestinal tolerance. It is non-toxic and has been used on over 4000 patients without problems. Its major use is in treating falciparum malaria. Be sure to check out part 2 of this video on how to use Artemisinin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_DPKvCcKkM Take Dr. Saputo's Free Cancer Health Assessment Once you have cancer you want to know what you can do to get rid of it and keep it gone! Never Be Fat Again with Raymond Francis

05:24
Raymond Francis wrote the book, Never Be Fat Again, and explains why being overweight is a symptom, not a cause for this disease. Much of the cause of obesity is related to inflammation in the body caused by an unhealthy lifestyle that includes a poor diet, lack of exercise and sleep, too much stress, and exposure to environmental chemicals. There is a lot that can be done to reverse these factors. Involved in this process is resistance to both insulin and leptin.

The Dangers of Thiazide Diuretics in Treating Hypertension

04:53
According to a collaborative study between the University of Texas Medical Center and UCSF Medical Center that was published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society in June of 2014, people over the age of 65 who are treated with thiazide diuretics (such as HCTZ -- which is hydrochlorthiazide -- or Hygroton), are in danger of developing several metabolic defects. This study pointed out three metabolic defects that include hyponatremia (low sodium), hypokalemia (low potassium), and acute kidney injury where there was at least a 25% decrease in kidney function. Wow! And there's more that was not included in this article such as causing high cholesterol and uric acid (predisposes to gout), insulin resistance (predisposes to type 2 diabetes), and low magnesium! And this is the first drug of choice according to the major medical associations that set the guidelines for treating high blood pressure! Wow! It makes you wonder about the rest of the drugs used in managing this disease. Lifestyle remains the best treatment for managing hypertension. For more information, please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

What is the Difference Between Brown and White Fat?

06:26
There are many different ways to classify fat: saturated, trans, unsaturated, brown, white, and essential fatty acids. Some are essential for life and some are lethal. Where fat accumulates is also important. If white fat accumulates inside the abdominal cavity it predisposes to the metabolic syndrome and type two diabetes with all of its complications. However, if it accumulates in other places, it actually extends life expectancy! Brown fat accumulates in the neck in humans. Contrary to white fat which stores fat and makes us overweight, brown fat burns fat when the body is exposed to cold and is associated with a lower body weight. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could convert white fat to brown fat so we'd tend to burn it and weight less? Maybe not! So far, drugs that do this have been lethal. I find it very interesting that we're always looking for ways to subvert the way nature operates rather than live a healthy lifestyle. It is also interesting that fat is a highly active tissue metabolically. In general, we have a fat phobia in this country that is off target. Fat is a healthy food and what our body burns for fuel most of the time. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Kava Works for Anxiety and is Safe

04:11
An Australian study published in the May issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology claims that the kava works very well to reduce symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder. They studied 75 people over 8 weeks and found kava hasa lesss risk for addiction and fewer possible side effects. They found that 26% of the kava group went into remission, whereas only 6% of the placebo group improved. Years ago kava got a bad rap because preparations of the herb that were used were contaminated with the stems and leaves rather than just the root. Many people taking these preparations developed hepatitis. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Exercise Helps Congestive Heart Failure

03:14
Moderate exercise helps ease depression in patients with chronic congestive heart failure (CHF) and is also associated with a small reduction in death and hospitalizations. Even the failing heart can be strengthened by exercise as measured by peak oxygen consumption and longer duration of exercise that is done carefully under the supervision of a qualified physician. Clinical depression may affect as many as 40% of the 5 million people with CHF and many studies have linked worse clinical outcomes for people with heart attacks, unstable angina, coronary bypass surgery and CHF. A clinical trial at Duke University Medical Center that was published in the August issue of JAMA documented these findings after just 30 minutes of moderate exercise three times a week for one year. This is much better and safer way to increase cardiac output than with drugs and surgery. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Infant Brains Benefit from Breastfeeding

04:02
The benefits of breastfeeding compared to infant formula was studied in 133 babies from 10 months to 4 years of age. Those fed with breast milk had much better brain development than those fed formula according to a June 2013 issue of the journal Neuroimage. There was a 20-30% greater development in language skills, emotional function, and cognition in the breast fed group. This group also had the fastest growth of myelin white matter in the brain as documented by MRI studies and also on cognitive testing mearuring language performance, visual reception, and motor control. Meditation has Long-term Effects on the Brain

04:15
According to scientists from Harvard and Boston University, meditation produces enduring changes in emotional processing in the brain according to an article published in November of 2012 in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience. Researchers trained people with one of two different types of meditation, mindful meditation and compassionate meditation over an 8 week period. They measured activity in the brain using functional MRIs 3 weeks before the study and at 3 weeks after and noted what happened to areas of the brain related to compassion. They found the those people who learned compassionate meditation had a different and more loving response 3 weeks after the course even when not meditating. Iron Supplements can Reduce Fatigue

04:08
According to a study in the July 2012 issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, iron supplementation reduced fatigue by about 50% in women with low iron but without anemia. When ferritin levels are below 50 and women with fatigue are supplemented with just 80 mg of iron per day over 12 weeks, their fatigue decreased and their iron levels increased as measured by ferritin levels, and hemoglobin levels increased as well. Iron levels need to be just right; not too low and not too high. When they are too low, fatigue, anemia, and lack of normal amounts of energy ensue. When iron levels are too high, they feed cancer cells and bacteria and also increase the amount of free radical radicals, which makes us age much faster. What You Should Know About Blood Pressure Pills by Len Saputo, MD

05:30
The goal of Big Pharma is to sell drugs, whether safe or not. It is always advertising new on-patent drugs because they have the greatest potential for profit. The most effective drug for blood pressure control has been around for 50 years, is off-patent, is about $10 per month; it is called hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). Even HCTZ causes problems that include elevated cholesterol, insulin resistance, loss of potassium and magnesium, and an increased risk for gout.. Preventing Strokes: Aspirin, Plavix, Coumadin, Pradaxa, or What?

07:36
A large clinical trial testing the effects of aspirin and Plavix to prevent small strokes was stopped because there was no added benefit by combining these drugs and the risk of bleeding was too high. This information was presented at the 2012 American Stroke Association meeting in February of 2012. A second abstract presented at the same conference showed that Coumadin and aspirin were equally effective in preventing deaths and strokes in patients with congestive heart failure. All of the drugs used to anticoagulate people in mainstream medicine, which includes, aspirin, Plavix, Coumadin, and Pradaxa are associated with potentially life-threatening bleeding. Coumadin also has the effect of causing osteoporosis and accelerating arteriosclerosis after just 2 years of treatment. Nutritional medicine offers several options that include fish oil, nattokinase, lumbrokinase, and ginkgo biloba, but they have been alll but ignored by MDs because there's not sufficient research to compare the effects of mainstream drugs to these nutrients. These studies should be done the by NIH! For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Low Dose Naltrexone by Len Saputo, MD

06:39
Low dose naltrexone (LDN) has been implicated to help with cancer, HIV/AIDS, autoimmune diseases, and much more. Now it has been shown to have a potent antitumor effect on human ovarian cancer in both tissue culture and in animal xenografts. Naltrexone (NTX) is a general oioid receptor antagonist that results in compensatory elevation in endogenous oioids and opioid receptors. It has a powerful inhibition of cell lproliferation. Studies showed that LDN could also increase the effects of chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. Cancer Prevention and Options for Treatment by Len Saputo, MD

07:23
The definition of cancer means that cancer cells don't die as they are programmed, they lack apoptosis. The reasons for this range from genetic defects to overgrowth of chromosomes. Cancer is believed to be caused by genetic factors, poor lifestyle, radiation exposure, and pollution. Spread of cancer is complicated; it is not haphazard. Combining mainstream and alternative strategies provides the best outcomes, but is rarely available. Early detection is discussed. Diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and weight have a powerful effect on whether or not you'll get cancer. Never Fear Cancer Again with Raymond Francis

07:12
Cancer is a symptom of abnormal cellular function that is caused by nutritional deficiencies and toxicities rather than simple genetics. Actually, only 1-2% of cancers a strictly genetic and the rest are caused by epigenetics (lack of nutrients and excessive exposure to toxic environmental chemicals). There is a lot we can do to prevent cancer from developing and Raymond explains this here and in more detail in his book, Never Fear Cancer Again. If we can maintain normal oxygen consumption of our cells we can prevent cancers. Changing our intracellular pH from just slightly acidic to slightly alkaline can alter the oxygen delivered to our cells by more than 100 times. Lifestyle also has a great deal in causing cancer. Treating Dry Eyes with Nutrition

07:31
In nutritional medicine we've known for years that many people are helped from an opthalmic solution of dilute flax seed oil! New research shows that a combination of the EPA and DHA that most humans make from the alpha-linolenic acid in flax seed oil, in combination with GLA, which is made from the omega 6 essential fatty acid (linoleic acid) also in flax seed oil, can effectively treat many people with the dry eye syndrome. This was published in the July Issue of the journal, Cornea. Dry eyes occur when there is not enough or else poor quality tears. There are three layers of tears, mucus on the surface of the eye to smooth out the surface, water and electrolyes on top of the mucus, and an oil made by the glands in the eyelids, called Meibomian glands, which slows evaporation of the water in tears. Defects in any of these layers can lead to dry eyes. What is not mentioned in the article is that EPA and DHA are what waterproof the surfaces of the body. When we're short in essential fatty acids it can add to the development of dry eyes. The many causes of dry eyes and its treatment are reviewed in this video. Epidural Steroid Injections May Lead to Worse Outcomes

04:40
According to the February 2013 issue of the journal, Spine, epidural steroid injections (ESI) often lead to more pain and level of functioning at 4 years. In the short term, ESI can have a profound effect on pain relief. In those eventually going to surgery, compared to those not getting ESI, surgeries were shorter as was hospital stay. While steroids reduce inflammation marvelously, they also have a powerful effect on slowing healing. Integrative approaches, such as chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, ultrasound, hypnotherapy, qiqong, and infrared light therapy are most ideal because they reduce inflammation but also speed up healing. How Much Vitamin C Do You Need?

07:23
The RDA for vitamin C is enough to prevent scurvy, but not enough to prevent heart attacks, strokes, cancer and many infectious diseases. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, we should raise the RDA from 70 mg in women and 90 mg in men to 200 mg per day. While we could get 200 mg per day in our diets, few of us consume 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. In addition we live in a sea of toxins that lead to considerable free radical stress, and we don't have the antioxidant reserves we need to neutralize them. The actual amount of vitamin C we need depends on our situation, which can include infections, cancer, toxic exposures, stress, insufficient sleep, diet, smoking and many other lifestyle factors. The amount we need varies from a low of 200 mg per day to more than 100,000 mg per day (100 grams). The concept of bowel tolerance is discussed as is the use of intravenous vitamin C. Americans Get Too Many Colonoscopies

04:45
Gastroenterologists and the American Society for Gastroenterology recommend screening colonoscopies begin at age 50 and be repeated every 10 years unless there is a special indication for more often. However, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is questioning this recommendation. A study published in the September 2014 issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine followed the medical records of 1429 patients aged 50-65 years of age and found that 871 patients with normal exams were re-scoped on the average of 6 years later. Oddly, those patients who had precancerous adenomas were not re-screened as would be recommended in 25% of the patients. It is difficult to understand this situation. As usual, lifestyle is a very important tool that prevents colorectal cancer. Diet, exercise, adequate sleep, low levels of stress, sunlight, and weight management are each powerful tools to prevent colon cancer. If we all practiced a healthy lifestyle, colon cancer would be a rare disease.

Managing Vaginal Dryness with Probiotics

04:56
Researchers from Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland medical centers published an article in the October 2013 issue of the journal, Menopause, showing that the microflora in the vagina changes throughout a woman's reproductive life and that abnormalities in this microflora can cause vaginal dryness and painful intercourse (dysparunea). They studied 87 women from age 35-60 years of age and found that the microflora changed over the different stages of a woman's reproductive life. They correlated a deficiency of the bacteria, lactobacillus with the degree of vaginal dryness. It appears that creating a cocktail of different microbes could be a treatment for this condition. Hiatal Hernia, Barrett's Esophagus, and Esophageal Cancer

07:25
Barrett's esophagus develops in people who have bile reflux into the stomach and lower end of the esophagus in the presence of a hiatal hernia. It causes "intestinalization" of the lower end of the esophagus, which is then prone to develop esophageal cancer. However, unless there is dysplasia of the Barrett's esophagus, the risk for developing cancer is low. The risk for developing esophageal cancer in the general public is about one in a thousand. In those people with dysplastic changes in Barrett's esophagus, the risk of cancer is 0.51%, or about one in two hundred. Most gastroenterologists follow their patients with Barrett's esophagus using upper GI endoscopy every year or two hoping to identify an esophageal cancer very early so it might be cured. If there are changes of dysplasia it might be wise to consider high frequency ablation of the surface lining of the Barrett's esophagus. Blocking acid production is not a good idea because of a high incidence of complications that include osteoporosis, senile dementia, addiction to acid blockers, and blocked absorption of B12, iron, calcium, and magnesium. The use of licorice root extract (DGL), l-glutamine, probiotics, and other nutrients can relieve symptoms and may help prevent the development of cancer. Proton Pump Inhibitors Increase Risk for Kidney Failure and Heart Attacks

04:58
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, and Aciphex have been available for about 20 years and each year about 15 million people use them and bring in $10 billion every year. PPIs are vastly overprescribed by MDs and because they are available over the counter, are overused by patients. The major known side effects of PPIs include poor digestion, poor absorption of B12, iron, calcium, and magnesium which lead to an increased risk for osteoporosis, senile dementia, C difficile infections, pneumonia and now according to articles in the January 11, 2016 issue of the journal Internal Medicine an increased risk for having chronic kidney disease and, as documented in the June of 2015 issue of the journal PLoS One, heart attacks. PPIs also block the metabolism of Valium, Coumadin, DIlantin, Digoxin and probably decrease the effectiveness of Plavix. For more information, visit http://doctorsaputo.com

Too Much Iron Accelerates Aging by Len Saputo, MD

05:25
Iron storage disease, or hemochromatosis, affects 10-15% of the population, and perhaps even more if you know how to diagnose it. Iron overload increases free radical damage via the Fenton reaction. Hepcidin is a hormone that regulates iron levels by increasing the absorption of iron. The is new research showing that at least experimentally it is possible to block hepciden and lower levels of iron and LDL cholesterol by increasing reverse cholesterol transport. Iron is carcinogenic and cancer cells hoard it. Artemisinin is a possible treatment for cancer. Check this out by putting artemisinin in the search box on www.doctorsaputo.com. What is the Clinical Importance of Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure

08:38
A review of 1.25 million medical records of 30 year olds and older from a primary care practice for 5 years in England and looked at the different effects of systolic and diastolic blood pressure when it came to intracerebral bleeds, angina, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and renal disease. They published their results in the May issue of the journal The Lancet. It was discovered that in a 30 year old with hypertension the lifetime risk for developing cerebrovascular disease was 63% compared to 46% in those with normal blood pressure. They also found that those with hypertension developed cardiovascular disease about 5 years sooner.

How Safe is St. John's Wort?

06:33
A study published in the June 2014 issue of the Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine disclosed that in 28% of the cases when St. John's Wort was used there was the potential for harmful combinations when combined with pharmaceutical drugs. Apparently SJW induces accelerated detoxification of the same pathways in the liver as are used by birth control pills, Coumadin, many chemotherapies, and blood pressure medications. This would lower serum levels of these drugs and lead to potentially less pharmacological effect and lessened effectiveness for these drugs. This information is important and should be considered in clinical practice. In fact, we should be aware of the effects of all supplements and herbs when they are combined with drugs or for that matter, with other supplements and herbs as well. The place where this kind of thinking is most important is when combining different pharmaceutical drugs! We have almost no data on this, yet we continue to boldly mix and match different drugs routinely in conventional medical practice. There is a clear double standard that favors pharmaceutical usage.

Ebola Cure Suppressed with Robert Rowen, MD

11:38
Ebola has been all over the global news for months. The disease is extremely lethal and conventional treatments are ineffective. Research in the form of clinical trials are being conducted for vaccines and drugs. Despite the fact that Dr. Robert Rowen was invited by the Sierra Leone government to teach their MDs about ozone treatment for Ebola and it was enthusiastically supported, the government refused to let their doctors use it on people dying of the disease who had no hope. Treatment with ozone is completely safe and after treating millions of people with it, when used properly there have been no serious side effects or deaths. Dr. Rowen explains the virology of Ebola infections, how it gets into our cells, as well as what oxidative therapy is, how it works, and why it could be the perfect treatment for Ebola.

Adverse Effects of Statins are Far Worse Than You Think

07:18
Whenever drug is criticised, big pharma comes to the rescue to salvage profits. What else would you expect when the reason big pharma exists is to make profits for their shareholders. Last year (2013) the British Medical Journal printed an article that criticized a previous article published in the same journal that suggested extending treatment with statins for people with a low risk for cardiovasculars disease. Needless to say, this caused a hullabaloo for those people who published the previous study, the Cholesterol Treatment Trialists' Collaboration, with the contention that their data that showed an 18-20% incidence of adverse drug reactions was incorrect. Of course, it depends on what you consider an ADE! Most of the data identifying the side effects comes from the website of the manufacturer of the drug in question. Do you think this information is likely to include the full extent of side effects when the goal is to sell drug to make profit? For example, we reported a study showing that 40% of people on statins had muscle fatigue, and in 10% it was severe. It is necessary to add up the percentages from each side effect to see the incidence of side effects. Have a look at this URL: http://www.doctorsaputo.com/a/statins-cause-fatigue

Flaxseeds Lower Blood Pressure

07:28
The largest decrease in BP ever shown by any dietary intervention is flaxseeds according to a paper presented at the American Heart Association 2012 Scientific Sessions. Just 2 tablespoons of milled flax seeds resulted in a drop of 10 mm of Hg systolic and 7 mm Hg diastolic. This is equivalent to most antihypertensive drugs, and without their associated "side effects." Flaxseeds cause a doubling of plasma alpha linolenic acid and a 10 fold increase in lignans that in combination with the high fiber content of flaxseeds, each of which lower BP. This level of reduction of BP would be expected to result in 50% fewer strokes and a 30% reduction in heart attacks. The body converts the alpha linolenic acid into EPA and DHA, which have profound positive effects on inflammation, coagulation, and cardiac rhythm disorders. FDA Warns Statins Increase Blood Sugar and Cause Memory Problems

04:44
The FDA has officially linked all statins with cognitive problems like forgetfullness and confusion as well as with a 25% increased risk for an elevated blood sugar level and possible association with type 2 diabetes. Statins are the best selling drugs on the market and are used by 21 million people in the US each year. Of course, there are all the other side effects as well that include liver disease, peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, muscle pain, kidney failure and erectile dysfunction and gynecomastia. New information shows statins can cause mitochondrial dysfunction that leads to a defect in energy production and decreased oxygen utilization. In addition we know that absorption of coenzyme Q10 is is blocked by these CoA reductase inhibitors as well and that this can lead to a cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. We need cholesterol for a number of functions that include production of vitamin D, many hormones, neurotransmitters, and cell membranes. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Vitamin D3 Supplementation Treats Prostate Cancer

04:33
Patients with low risk prostate cancer under active surveillance may benefit from vitamin D3 supplementation at 4000 IU per day according to an article in the Journal of Endocrinology Metabolism. In patients with Gleason 6 prostate cancers, those treated with 4000 IU of vitamin D3 for one year, 55% had a decrease in Gleason findings or fewer positive biopsies, 11% were without change, and 34% were somewhat worse. The PSA scores did not change in these patients. Levels of vitamin D less than 20 ng/ml showed a strong correlation with increased risk for death. We know that vitamin D increases differentiation of cancer cells. Besides treating Gleason 6 prostate cancers with vitamin D, there are other approaches that could be of value, such as an alkaline diet, use of modified citrus pectin, flax seed oil, lifestyle strategies, mushrooms, antioxidants, vitamin C and K. There are many articles supporting this approach such as one done by Dean Ornish, MD. Take Dr. Saputo's Cancer Health Assessment Once you have cancer you want to know what you can do to get rid of it and keep it gone! Diet Sodas Increase Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

04:07
A French study on 66,000 middle aged women over 14 years that was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in February of 2013, showed that drinking 12 oz per week of a diet soda increased the risk for type 2 diabetes by 33%. Increasing the amount to 20 oz per week increased the risk to 66%. It is interesting that the American Diabetes Association and the American Dietetic Association both recommend diet sodas for people who are obese and who have type 2 diabetes. The likely mechanism is that when a person consumes a diet beverage that the brain anticipates that sugar is coming into the blood stream. When this happens insulin is secreted to handle the load of suger that is expected, but it never comes and consequently blood sugar levels drop and make us hungry. Take Dr. Saputo's Type 2 Diabetes Health Assessment Dr. Saputo's Type 2 Health Assessment assesses what you what your risk factors are for type 2 diabetes, what are doing to control your diabetes in terms of drugs, supplements, and lifestyle, and reviews medications that can predispose to developing type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is usually a preventable and reversible disease once it has come on. It develops largely because of poor lifestyle habits related to diet, exercise, sleep, stress, weight, and toxic exposures (includes pharmaceutical drugs). While mainstream medicine relies mostly on drugs to manage blood sugar levels, all of these drugs have side effects, many of which are serious and even life-threatening. Dr. Saputo recommends lifestyle, dietary, and supplements as treatment for type 2 diabetes as strategies before using pharmaceutical drugs. Vitamin K Protects Against Getting Type 2 Diabetes

06:22
According to an article published in the October issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, in a study of 1069 men and women with an average age of 67, over 5.5 years 131 developed type 2 diabetes. The highest intakes of vitamin K1 were associated with a 51% reduction in the incidence of type 2 diabetes compared to those with the lowest intakes. For every 100 microgram per day increase in the intake of vitamin K1 the risk of developing type 2 diabetes decreased by 17%. There are two main forms of vitamin K, K1 and K2. Ninety percent of our intake of vitamin K comes from our dietary intake of green leafy veggies and 10% comes from production in the intestinal tract from the microflora of the gut. It is well known that vitamin K is important in blood coagulation, in mineralization of bones, cell growth, and in the prevention of arteriosclerosis. Most doctors know that anticoagulation with Coumadin (warfarin) interferes with blood clotting and that vitamin K reverses this desired effect. However, even though it is reported in the mainstream medical literature, few doctors appreciate that by avoiding the intake of vitamin K containing foods, as is usually recommended when Coumadin ordered, that we become deficient in vitamin K and are at risk for the complications of vitamin K deficiency. After being on a diet low in vitamin K for 1-2 years the risk for arteriosclerosis and aortic valve calcification increase dramatically. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

What is Obamacare and is it the Answer to America's Health Challenges?

11:49
The Patient Protection Affordable Care Act, known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or "Obamacare," became law in March of 2010 is is the topic of considerable confusion. To begin with it is nearly 2700 pages long and is written in complex legal terminology that few understand; this includes, believe it or not, most of the US Congress! The ACA is supposed to protect patients against unfair insurance company practices, provide greater access for health care, rein in out-of-control health care costs, add more consumer benefits and protection, and make health care more affordable. It does all these things, but the devil is in the details. Truly, it is controversial, but it is a start and it will be mandatory to have health insurance starting in January of 2014. We'll soon see what the ACA will bring. California is the first real test of what the ACA will mean. Dr. Len simplifies and reviews the plusses and minuses of the ACA and reveals who are the winners and losers as a result of this new law. For a simple overview of Obamacare you won't want to miss this video! For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Probiotics vs Antibiotics for Recurrent Urinary Infections

05:53
Mainstream treatment for recurring urinary tract infections has been antibiotics, but now an article in the May of 2012 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine shows that probiotics are nearly as effective as antibiotics over a one year period in decreasing the number of urinary tract infections. The problem with antibiotics is their side effects. They cause bacterial resistance in the intestinal tract that can lead to dysbiosis and C. difficile infections that can be life threatening. Oral and intravaginal probiotics are a reasonable approach to preventing these infections. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Green Tea Lowers Blood Sugar Spikes

07:12
The November 2012 issue of Molecular Nutrition and Food Research reported that an ingredient in 1 and 1/2 cups of green tea, epigallocatchin (EGCG), helps reduce blood sugar spikes by about 50% when taken with starches. Some of the effect may be related to the fact that EGCG reduces the activity of alpha amylase (which digests starch) by 34%. If you're at risk for type 2 diabetes, and you want to consume starches such as a bagel or toast, drinking green tea should help to reduce the rise in blood sugar that is accompanied by these types of food. When blood sugar levels exceed about 170, a process called glycation ensues that leads to the destruction of important proteins in the body such as hormones and enzymes. How to Lose Weight on a High Fat Diet

05:38
Research from the University of Jerusalem published in FASEB shows that a scheduled high fat diet leads to weight loss because of increased fat burning. Snacking upsets this process. A previous study published in Cell Metabolism in early 2012 showed that feeding rats the same number of calories over 24 hours rather than over 8 hours also led to weight gain. It appears that body metabolism is regulated by circadian rhythms of hormones such as cortisol, thyroid hormone, insulin, and leptin. Fasting between meals is important in maintaining fat burning rather than fat storage. Being on a scheduled high fat diet led to more weight loss than a scheduled low fat diet, but the reasons why are unknown. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Drug Company Kickbacks to Doctors and Pharmacists

05:29
The US government is filing a law suit against the drug company, Novartis, for giving $65 million kickbacks to physicians and pharmacists to prescribe Lotrel, Valturna, Starlix, and Myfortis over the past decade. These kickbacks were in the form of dinners at high end restaurants, cash, rebates, and discounts. One extreme example is from a six person oncology group that received $2.9 million in kickbacks in just one year! It is a huge conflict of interest that is common practice for many oncologists to make in excess of a hundred thousand dollars a year in drug company rebates for using their drugs. Many of these profits involve Medicare, Medicaid, and the VA hospital system. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Vitamin D3 Helps Clear Amyloid in Alzheimer's Disease

05:05
Vitamin D3 and curcumin stimulate macrophages to clear the beta amyloid from the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease according to an article published in the March issue of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. Low levels of vitamin D3 are associated with Alzheimer's disease. Researchers studied macrophages isolated from patients with Alzheimer's disease and healthy controls. They incubated these cells overnight with amyloid beta, some in the presence of vitamin D3 and/or curcumin. They discovered that vitamin D3 activated a specific chloride channel that is needed to clear amyloid beta. Vitamin D3 was a powerful stimulant and curcumin was weak, but had activity. Information from the NHANES 111 report showed that vitamin D3 deficiency is associated with an increase risk for cognitive impairment in older Americans. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is like an electrical "brown out" that develops as energy production of the hippocampal region of the brain begins to fail and atrophies. Nutritional programs make it possible to resuscitate some mitochondrial energy production and either stabilize or improve symptoms. Drugs are not a good solution because they provide minimal help and they have worrisome of side effects. Lifestyle strategies such as mental and physical exercise can delay or prevent the onset of AD and should always be part of an AD treatment program. It is also important to know that there are many prescription medications that are "anti-cholinergic" that are discussed in the videos below that can aggravate symptoms and should be avoided. Lastly, Dr. Saputo provides new cutting edge research that includes how light therapies can be used to reverse some symptoms of AD. For those of you interested in incorporating the most recent scientific breakthroughs into your treatment program, Dr. Saputo suggests you take our Alzheimer’s Disease Health Assessment. It is free and only takes about 2 minutes to complete. Based on how you fill out the assessment, certain audio and video files will be suggested for your review to help you learn what is possible deal with your particular symptoms. Vitamin D Inhibits Inflammation

05:38
A study published in March of 2011 showed that low levels of vitamin D failed to inhibit the inflammatory cascade and that normal levels did. Levels of inflmamatory cytokines, interlukin 6 and TNF-alpha, correlated with low levels of vitamin D. The vitamin D receptor binds to DNA directly and activates a gene, MKP-1, which quiets the inflammatory response. It could be that chronic inflammatory diseases such as asthma, arthritis, and even cancer could benefit from maintaining a normal vitamin D level. Garlic Superior to Antibiotics for Common Food-borne Illnesses

03:55
A compound in garlic, diallyl disulfide, according to an article in the May issue of the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, is more than 100 times more potent than Cipro or erythromycin in food borne illnesses caused by campylobacter, pathogenic E. coli, and listeria infections. There are far more complication from pharmaceutical drugs than from this garlic extract. There are about 2.4 million cases of campylobacter infections in the US annually. Diallyl sulfide is far more capable to penetrating the biofilm these bacteria exude than antibiotics and work in a fraction of the time and far more effectively in shutting down their metabolism. This compound may be useful as a preservative and as a sterilizing agent to clean industrial food processing equipment. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Methyl Jasmonate as a Treatment for Cancer by Len Saputo, MD

04:01
Methyl jasmonate is a plant hormone that is able to disrupt the mitochondria of cancer cells, but not normal cells. This would add to the abilitiy of cancer cells to produce energy and perhaps help destroy cancer cells. We clearly need more research on this inexpensive and readily available treatment. Hopefully the National Institutes of Health (NIH) would fund research on this as there is no incentive for Big Pharma to become involved because they cannot patent their research on natural substances. Dr. Saputo's Cancer Health Assessment Once you have cancer you want to know what you can do to get rid of it and keep it gone! In this Health Assessment we will ask you questions about what treatment(s) you have undergone, which complementary and alternative treatments might be of interest to you, what lifestyle factors could help slow down or prevent a recurrence, and what you might want to consider if your cancer is causing pain or if your situation is terminal. How Artificial Sweeteners Cause Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity

05:44
According to the October 2014 issue of the journal, Nature, artificial sweeteners such as saccharine, Splenda, and Nutrasweet (aspartame) cause changes in the human microbiome (intestinal microflora) that lead to glucose intolerance (insulin resistance) within one week in more than half of the subjects of a small study. When stool from these people was tranplanted to mice, the mice developed insulin resistance. However, when stool from those people who did not develop glucose intolerance was transpanted to mice, it did not cause insulin resistance. Thus, the abnormalities causing the early changes of type 2 diabetes and of obesity were transmitted by the intestinal microflora! It is ironic that artificial sweeteners that have low or no calories is causing the reverse effect of why they were introduced! Now we need to inform the American Dietetic Association, the American Diabetes Association, and MDs that articifial sweeteners should never be recommended. Let's see how long it takes for these changes to come into clinical practice. Once again, follow the dollars if you want to understand how artificial sweeteners were approved by the FDA and endorsed by organizations with conflicts of interest.

Medical School-Big Pharma Conflicts of Interest

06:11
The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is grading med schools on their ability to block Big Pharma representatives from bribing them with meals, gifts, free drug samples, and industry funded education. Only two medical schools had a perfect scorecard. Of the 152 med schools, only 105 received a grade of A or B. This was up from 2008 when only 79 schools passed. My book, A Return to Healing, has a chapter called: The Karma of Big Pharma is at times shameful, especially when it comes to the research it funds. They have 10s of millions invested that from a purely business point of view. We have a long way to go to disengage from the tentacles of the pharmaceutical companies. Congratulations to the medical students who recognize and understand this dreadful situition and are taking steps to fix it. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

The Importance of Iron in Infections and Cancer

07:27
According to the December issue of PLOS ONE, Iron plays a key role in metabolism that leads to bacteria and human beings competing to prevent the other from obtaining it. Bacteria are obligated to acquire iron to gain foothold to grow in host tissues. Cancer cells also sequester iron more effectively than normal cells. This is one of the reasons why artemisinin may be effective as cThe Importance of Iron in Infections and Cancerhemotherapy. Everyone should have their iron level measured, especially if they have a bacterial infection or cancer. About 5-10% of the population has excessive iron stores, which can have a powerful effect on the risk for making infections more dangerous, contributing to the aggressiveness of cancer, and causing premature aging. One of the ways of enhancing the sequestration of iron is through the use of lactoferrin. Colonoscopy Screening Questioned by Len Saputo, MD

04:24
The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published an article saying that colonoscopy for primary screening might be going too far. I agree! The benefits, harms, and costs have not been determined. Checking the stool for ocult blood and flexible sigmoidoscopy have been shown to be of value but there's no data showing that colonoscopy gives additional protection. Virtual colonoscopy is even more questionable as if there are abnormal findings one still has to do a colonoscopy and there's the issue of radiation damage and later cancer risk. Yet the American College of Gastroenterology and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network continue to recommend colonoscopy as a primary screening tool. Because of the obvious conflict of interest this is not very surprising. The benefits of colonoscopy is that 1 in 200 people will have a major benefit from the procedure. However the same number will have either a perforation of the colon or major bleed that requires transfusions. In addition colonoscopy misses a lot of right sided cancers even though it is recommended that all polyps are removed, even those that are of no danger. Screening for Colon Cancer No one wants to get colon cancer and colonoscopy has been touted to be the best way to find asymptomatic precanceous and cancerous lesions of the colon that could be lifesaving. This makes logical sense, however, the United States Preventive Services Task Force in now questioning this test for healthy people who have no GI symptoms. For more information, visit http://doctorsaputo.com/a/screening-for-colon-cancer

Can Diet Treat ADD and ADHD?

06:28
A study published in the journal, Pediatrics, in January of 2012 concluded that adding essential fatty acids could treat children with ADD and ADHD. It went on to state that adopting a healthy dietary pattern that includes fish, vegetables, fruit, legumes, and whole grains is a good idea because most kids with ADD and ADHD consume a diet high in fast foods, red meats, processed meat, potato chips, high-fat dairy, and soft drinks. They found it was unusual for a child to have these conditions if they consumed a healthy diet. We have known for decades that essential fatty acid (EFA) metabolism is abnormal with kids who have ADD and ADHD. They actually consume as much EFAs as normal kids, but they cannot metabolize them into their downchain metabolites that include EPA, DHA, arachidonic acid, and gammalinolenic acid. It is possible to treat these kids with EFAs and lower symptoms along with the dyslexia, dyspraxia, and night blindness they so often suffer from. There is a product called Efalex that has the proper balance of these EFAs. Dr. Saputo has a free ADD/ADHD health Assessment at http://doctorsaputo.com Our ADD/ADHD Health Assessment asks you questions about how the diagnosis was made, what symptoms you have, how you are managing your symptoms, and what can be done to treat this problem with and without drugs. ADD and ADHD are common diagnoses that now are reported to affect at least 5% of our children and many of these kids suffer from family or other social dysfunction that masquerade as these conditions. It is important to support our children with psychotherapy and general and targeted nutrition. While optimal nutrition with whole, unprocessed, unrefined foods without additives and preservatives is critical, there are specific essential fatty acids that are critical to replace to avoid biochemical defects that not only lead to the commonly appreciated symptoms of these conditions but also to the commonly under-appreciated findings that include dyslexia, dyspraxia, night blindness and dry skin. Obtaining an essential fatty acid profile is a good idea for everyone who has one of these diagnoses. You can take the assessment here http://doctorsaputo.com/a/add-adhd-health-assessment

General Anesthesia Can Cause Dementia

04:20
An article in Annals of Neurology in February of 2012 showed that in mice the anesthetic Forane caused impaired cognitive function that were much like the changes in Alzheimer's disease. Previous studies have documented that patients undergoing general anesthesia may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Transient cognitive dysfunction is common after general anesthesia. Forane showed increased mitochondrial permeability, reduced ATP production, and increased levels of the cell-death enzyme, caspase in tissue culture experiments. None these changes was found with either spinal anesthesia or with Suprane anesthesia. The authors recommended against using Forane with the elderly or with patients with Alzheimers. I can't imagine why anyone would want to use Forane when other drugs are possible. It is very important to interview the person doing one's anesthesia as well as learn about the drugs planned for usage during surgery. For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com
